Western society has degraded to an unprecedented degree. I think it's even below what Wiemar Germany was in the late nineteen twenties. Sexual perversions have moved from theaters and street corners to the Internet. The cities may look cleaner, But that doesn't mean people are more sober today than they were a hundred years ago. What does this have to do with Snapchat?
Snapchat is a semi-pointless messaging app. Besides standard chatting, it enables the creation and sharing of pictures and video with a limited display time. You can only guess what kind of media is generally being sent in this way (sexting to be exact).
Special effort has been put into facial recognition and movement tracking. Besides simple drawing and stamps, you can enhance your portrait using real time filters. These filters distort and/or add in graphical elements. This is to either to give you a stereotypical face or transform you into a furry. In case you don't know what furries are, it suffices to say that there are subcultures that should be ignored at best. These creations can be shared in conversations and can also be stored (locally or in the cloud).
Snapchat also features a news section where you can browse for up to date info in the realm of entertainment and curiosities.
- Real time filters

Well, Snapchat is a great example of software that is completely useless, yet excites people into using it. Does it enhance communication? Not unless you consider filming yourself wearing a pair of dog ears as "enhancement". Pictures and videos that you use in "communicating" have a display time limit. Why would that be? Can this be anything else than an avenue for sending potentially embarrassing material. You might ask, 'Why is there so much hate over an innocent app?' Because if 11 million users had to install this pointless thing, that means they have nothing better to do with their time. They are also very willing to let a third party have access their compromising media, just because it has enabled its creation.
